Back in July, my local Facebook mom’s group had a post from a mama looking for places to buy some inexpensive Legos for her son’s birthday. Times had been tough for this family financially, emotionally, medically, and they were just dealing with a lot. After some discussion she shared that her son James had never had a birthday party, or felt included due to his differences, he never had playdates or friends.
This incredible community of mamas that I belong to, rallied to change all of that.
In a couple of days, they planned the greatest Lego birthday celebration for James! A few angel moms took on the planning role and one of them generously offered her house and backyard for the party. They had balloon artists, Legos donated from Belk and other moms, Lego tables, sensory bins donated by an incredible momtrepreneur, a huge balloon garland made by a mama (She set it up in 90+ degrees while baby-wearing, by the way!), cakes and cupcakes made by local moms, donations for snacks, water, pizza for 50 people! I felt a strong connection and knew I needed to help, so I offered to document the party and capture all the sweet moments for James and his family. The invite was extended to our mom community, and the turnout was huge!
James was surrounded by new friends, activities, toys, gifts, experiences he has never had and so much love! James' mom said it was the best day their family has had in a very long time and one of the best days of her life. James had such a great day, and he saved all the cards and put them on the walls of his bedroom, so he could “have a sleepover with all of his new friends.” It was a great day of love and inclusion for everyone!
It was a truly amazing day, and still brings tears to my eyes thinking about it.
